JAMES Varnish confirmed he was resigned to the fact his cycling star daughter Jess would be left out of Great Britain's squad for the Rio Olympics this summer.

Great Britain have named a 26 strong line-up for Rio, but there is remarkably no place for Finstall's Jess Varnish who is recognised as one of the top five best track sprinters in the world.

Jess Varnish had earlier unveiled high profile criticism of British Cycling and in particular its head Shane Sutton, who has since stepped down.

But James Varnish declared: "I would have fallen off my seat had Jess been selected - but she has massively moved on now.

"Her inclusion for Rio was always going to be a non-starter. The team selection was finalised six weeks ago.

"We went through the appeal process and held out some hope at the time that commonsense would be adhered to - but that didn't work.

"It's like a closed door and there's no transparency. It was never like this for London!

"But the criticism has just just come from us - there are other people completely unhappy including London gold medalist Dani King. She has also met all the criteria asked of her and then not selected either.

"As for Jess going to Rio - that was never going to happen!
