VETERAN goalkeeper Neil Leech is set to make a sensational return to senior football as he steps into the breach for Bromsgrove Sporting’s FA Cup clash at Heath Hayes.

Leech played in the final games in pre-season in preparation for Saturday’s knockout clash, with Chris Jay set to miss the game.

The 40-year-old had been playing over-35s football recently but his performances in the victories over Walsall Wood and Stratford have encouraged boss Paul Smith.

Sporting are also set to be without suspended duo Aaron Roberts (two games), Keenan Meakin-Richards – who has a four-game ban – and Robbie Bunn is away on holiday.

Smith said: “Finding a goalkeeper for the FA Cup has been quite difficult because teams from higher up the levels don’t want to loan one out and get them cup-tied.

“We’ve young keepers at under-18s and 21 levels but they have looked a bit nervous, so I am delighted to have Neil on board.

“He may be 40 but he’s in great shape and played very well against Stratford and Walsall, pulling off one great save.

“We’re missing one or two for the game but I am very happy with the squad and it’s a chance to players to come in.”

This season is unusual as the FA Cup extra-preliminary round normally comes several weeks later but Smith was unfazed by the change.

He said: “Heath Hayes and ourselves are in the same boat but all we can do is make sure we’re ready and do our best to win the game.”

Sporting – who completed their pre-season programme against Halesowen on Tuesday night – saw penalties from Tony Clarke and Chris Lloyd sink Southern League Premier Stratford on Saturday.

The Rouslers have produced some fine pre-season results but Smith is keeping his feet on the ground.

He added: “I could not be happier with the way we have played in pre-season but I have to stay grounded because it’s only pre-season.”

“The players have worked hard and we’re looking very good but we have to take that into the league.”
