TEENAGE ace Rebecca Redfern will be cheered on by her father Steve and eldest brother Anthony as she bids for Rio Paralympic glory tomorrow.

The 16-year-old Worcester Swimming Club member is competing in the visually impaired S13 100-metre breaststroke having qualified for Team GB at trials earlier this year.

Redfern, of Droitwich Spa, is ranked number one in the world for the event and is the current world record holder.

Her father Steve, an official and committee member at Worcester, said: “Rebecca would be disappointed to come away without a medal but she understands gold is not a given.

“She has worked hard to get herself into the best possible shape but knows her competition will also be in peak condition and expecting to swim their own personal best times.”

Steve added: “One of the main aims is for Rebecca to gain experience of major competition.

"She is still very young and there is no pressure on her although clearly she has desires to succeed.

“As long as Rebecca swims fast, faster than she has ever swum before, the medals will look after themselves.

“She cannot control what others do. She can only swim her own race as fast as possible and have a brilliant time.”

Her father says he is “indebted” to his "great" friends who clubbed together using a GoFundMe page to help fund his trip to the Paralympics.

“I would not have been able to go without the support of my friends,” he added.
