AVONCROFT suffered the agony of losing out by just one wicket following an enthralling Worcester County League Division Three contest with Rushwick.

That was after Avoncroft took first strike and found themselves bowled out for 144 in the 23rd over.

Opening bats David Jones with 51 off 24 balls and partner Ian Carpenter who made 21 shared a first wicket stand of 80.

From that point, wickets fell at regular intervals as Rushwick bowlers Clive Jones with six for 32 and Wayne Newman who took three for 31, mopping up the wickets.

Avoncroft were quick to hit back in reply as they soon reduced Rushwick to 24 for four, Paul Athey with two for 12 and Dan Elliott who claimed three for 40 causing the early damage.

Stuart Parker then struck 46 to steady the innings but Avoncroft were still on the verge of victory as Rushwick found themselves reduced to 119 for nine.

But Rushwick's last pair of Clive Jones and Tony Douglas refused to budge as they managed to accumilate the 26 runs required for victory, taking their side to a winning 145 for nine.

Avoncroft round off the season with a trip to Netherton on Saturday.
