DROITWICH Spa under 11s entered their first hockey tournament.

They opened with a 1-0 win over Bromsgrove B thanks to Natasha Linsey.

The town then lost 2-0 to Bromsgrove A and 1-0 to Kings Heath before drawing 0-0 with Old Halesonians.

Spa men lost their West Midlands League Division One opener 4-0 at county rivals Redditch.

The hosts missed an early chance before Dave Purchase and Matthew Lee went close to hitting the target for Spa.

But keeper George Robertshaw was beaten by a strike from a late penalty corner before half-time.

Redditch’s pressure then told as they scored three quick goals from close range and were only denied more by Robertshaw.

Spa’s Simon Baines said: “This was always going to be a difficult encounter but I was pleased with how the team are beginning to come together as it is a new-look side with youngsters who have pushed through the club’s ranks.

“The first half proved how the team can play composed hockey.”

Spa host Yardley, who they did the double over last season, on Saturday.

Man of the match Martyn Davies prevented more punishment as the seconds also lost to Redditch, this time 2-0 at home in West Midlands Division Two to first-half strikes.

Spa visit Solihull Blossomfield on Saturday.

The women remained unbeaten with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Old Halesonians to stay third in Worcestershire League Division Two.

The seconds thrashed Stourport fifths 6-0 with three goals in each half.

Emily Hassell opened the scoring early on before Rachel Cooper and Jenny Cooper completed the scoring in the first period.

Caitly Denby and Pat Hine mopped up any stray balls while Spa forwards, including Anna Weston and Gabriella Prendiville, hit with swift counter-attacks.

Prendiville flew down the right before her shot was deflected in off the keeper.

Player of the match Jenny Cooper and Rachel Cooper completed the success.
