BROMSGROVE tennis players made a pulsating start to the New Year by pulling off a series of prized victories.

The Ladies A side travelled to Division One leaders Stourbridge and produced a superb success, winning on countback in one of the closest matches played in a long time.

Bromsgrove didn't make the best of starts with the opening round of matches going against them.

The combination of Imogen Sinclair and Jilly Witcomb together with the pairing of Sally Franks and Tina Manning both lost out in third set tie breaks which went Stourbridge's way.

But Bromsgrove fought back as both pairs won their second matches, which again went to three sets.

With rubbers and sets even, Bromsgrove bagged victory by courtesy of winning the most games.

There was more success as Bromsgrove's Men's B team went top of Division 3E of the Hereford and Worcester League with a 3-1 win over Manor Park B from Malvern.

The Bromsgrove side maintained their unbeaten start to the season as Phil Boardman and Ash Rutter reeled off two comprehensive wins, both in two sets.

Steve Jones and Matt Smith then recovered from losing their first match following a tough three set battle to win their second contest in two sets.

Bromsgrove beat local rivals Droitwich 3-1 in Men's Division 5E.

The pairing of Tim Wright and Voitek Niedzwiedz lost their opening set but recovered to win 2-1 and then won their second contest 2-0.

Tim Roland and Trevor Errington also lost their opening set but battled back to win a marathon contest 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 to clinch victory.
