FRIGHTFUL Fairfield Villa floundered to a 4-0 defeat against Coventry side Alvis Sporting Club, which was effectively, a full dress rehearsal for next month's President's Cup final.

The result has sent Fairfield tumbling down to fifth place in Midland League Division Two and spokesman Paul Oakes insisted: "We are determined not to let the season peter out.

"It was disappointing that we had a late number of players becoming unavailable, which left us with only 12 players to face Alvis.

"That said, we missed some gilt-edged chances early in the game before Alvis had even scored."

Villa were due to visit Barnt Green Spartak on Wednesday night before bringing down the curtain on their league campaign with a home contest against Coton Green on Bank Holiday Monday (3pm kick off).

Oakes added: "There needs to be a marked improvement in both attitude and application. We need to get some confidence back before we face Alvis again."
