BELEAGURED Bromsgrove left it until the last game of the season to produce their best performance by pulling off an excellent 31-17 success at Lydney in National League 3 South West.

Such was the power of Bromsgrove's first half show, they virtually had the game wrapped up by half time when they led 31-7.

Outside centre Sam Bastock breezed over for an unconverted try within two minutes of the kick-off before right wing Cameron Simpson soon added a second.

A third try soon followed when No.8 Tom Hardwick picked up at the base of a scrum to surge over with full back Jon Critchlow converting.

Lydney were given a foothold back into the game when charging down a clearance kick to score a converted try.

But Bromsgrove soon resumed command with fly half Will Harris producing a clever kick and catch to secure the bonus point try before left wing Josh Holt raced over for a fifth which Critchlow converted.

Bromsgrove head coach Dan Protherough said: "Lydney had a right tongue-lashing at half time and were told they shouldn't be losing to the side which finished bottom of the table.

"But in truth, we could have easily scored more points as we turned down a couple of straightforward penalty shots at goal.

"There's no escaping the fact it has been a really tough year but the lads have shown great togetherness when it could have easily gone the other way.

"We've been reeling all year from RFU decisions and when they sentenced us to the South West Division, I don't think they had any appreciation of the scale of travelling involved.

"As a result, we've been firefighting all season and as Saturday showed, we've come through it pretty well.

"We come back to the Midlands next season and our intentions are to be the top team in the division.

"You don't get too many opportunities to win things in rugby, but it's a very sweet feeling when you do."
