TWO of Droitwich’s young national champions have been showcasing their talents in international boxing competitions.

ABA youth national champion Sian O’Toole travelled to Bulgaria to represent England in the European Championships.

But she was unlucky to be drawn against the holder and two-time world champion Sadiku Donjeta from Kosovo.

The 18-year-old Spa fighter was not overawed by her more experienced opponent though and produced an excellent display only to lose the three-round contest on points.

Joe Doyle, the national junior title holder at 40kg, returned to the Monkstown International Box Cup in Ireland where he won a gold medal last year and seemed destined to secure another.

His reputation saw him go straight through to the final where he delivered another polished display against Robert Dunn from Hendon Boxing Club, Sunderland, only to lose out on points.

The decision baffled his coaching team and the crowd in Dublin.

“Both Sian and Joe have enjoyed fantastic seasons and these were the first fights that haven’t gone their way after 10 and nine bouts respectively so neither should be disappointed,” said Droitwich Amateur Boxing Academy coach Jayson Doyle.

“Sian, who is now under contract at GB Boxing, gained much from her experience in Bulgaria and is now aiming for selection for the World Championships in India in September.

“While we thought Joe had done more than enough to win in Ireland he can be proud of a successful season that has brought him the national championship and he now has England training camps to look forward to over the summer as he prepares to move up two weight categories.”
