DROITWICH Amateur Boxing Club’s Joe ‘The Golden Boy’ Doyle got his season off to the perfect start in his bid to win a second successive National Junior Championships title.

The 15-year-old secured a fifth Midlands crown at the Triumph Works, Coventry, when he unanimously outpointed Callum Singh from the local Exhall Boxing Club on his home patch.

Fighting at the higher 48kg category and in his first competitive bout since being crowned national champion, Doyle used all of his experience to defeat his awkward southpaw opponent with his movement and hand speed coming to the fore.

Singh’s chin was on the receiving end of some powerful right-hand shots in the first but it was Doyle’s devastating combinations in the final round that put paid to his opponent as all five judges awarded the contest to the Droitwich boxer.

The pupil at Worcester's Blessed Edward Oldcorne College is now preparing for his national quarter-final contest against the Home Counties regional champion in Birmingham on Sunday, November 19.
