PAUL Smith will order his Bromsgrove Sporting players to forget all about the FA Vase for the time being, writes Nick Pullen.

Despite Sporting booking their place in the last 16 and a trip to Hellenic League side Thatcham Town on February 3, Smith had a very different slant on things this week.

The Sporting boss plans to bring everyone back down to earth in training this week following their epic 3-1 Vase victory at Wisbech Town.

He claimed: "We've got four or five really tough Midland League games to play before we can even start thinking about the FA Vase again and I want people to take their minds off the competition.

"I will do my homework in the meantime and will have them looked at.

But we have to concentrate on the league for the time being and the players need to put the game with Wisbech to bed.

"I've said from day one this season that the Midland Premier is a real strong league this season and we need to step up because things can change so quickly Smith has also hinted he's quite happy to make changes to his side for their trip to Stourport Swifts this Saturday despite the heroics at Wisbech.

Both recent signings Liam Holt and Drew Canavan come into the reckoning after being cup-tied and Smith insisted: "It's no good just having a strong 11 players, we need a strong 19 players.

"There's nobody in my squad that's bigger than anyone else and the players know it.

"When I sign any player, they know where they stand with me and have to buy into what we're trying to do. There are no issues as results justify selection.

"I was proud of all the players and the way they handled themselves at Wisbech under what was extreme provocation.

"We all got round goalkeeper Reece Francis at half time who was near to tears after he'd been subjected to racist abuse, something we will be reporting to the FA.

"Reece had pulled off some brilliant saves in the first when Wisbech put us under the cosh but we defended unbelievably well.

"Wisbech were probably one of the best sides we have played this year but they didn't score when they were on top.

"When you get two evenly matched sides, it's important you take your chances when they come but Wisbech didn't take theirs.

"But the discipline we showed was magnificent, even when the referee stopped the first half three minutes early because of the abuse being thrown about. I thought he handled things superbly.

The atmosphere was electric, but horrible at times and there was nowhere near enough stewards to cope.

"There were three old boys in charge, but they had no chance of dealing with anything.

"We must have taken over 400 supporters ourselves and Wisbech were totally unprepared for what we were bringing.

"It was easily the worst crowd trouble I've ever experienced.

"They gave the crowd at 650, but there was easily much more there.

"Flares going off left, right and centre and a Wisbech supporter tried to punch one of my players who was warming up as a substitute.

"I had a bad experience at Atherstone a couple of years back, but it was nothing compared to this. It was like going back to the dark ages.

"There was only one way to answer them - and that was by winning, which we did.
