WHEN Daniel Dubidat scored a wonder goal for Alvechurch, he was not expecting the worldwide attention that followed.

His Bergkamp-esque thigh control preceded a volley which sailed in to Sheffield FC’s goal last November, making the score 3-2 and going viral in the process.

And he deservedly won the Huck Nets Goal of the Season at the National Game Awards in association with SCL on Wednesday night.

The ceremony at Stamford Bridge celebrated the achievements of another special year of non-league football.

“When I hit it, I knew it was a good goal from the reaction everyone had, but you never really realise until afterwards the effect that it’s had,” said the striker, who now plays for Rushall Olympic.

“At the time you score a goal like that, a last-minute winner, you just think, ‘I’ve won the game’ and you don’t think about what’s going to happen after that.

“It was really good, to be fair. People like Gary Lineker and all kinds of footballers were talking about it and it was tweeted over 10,000 times around the world.

“People were talking about the (FIFA) Puskas award and stopping me in the street – it was crazy and really good.

“I don’t think I can score another goal better – not even on FIFA!”

Not only did Dubidat earn his accolade this week, but he is being touted as a possible recipient of the FIFA Puskas, awarded for scoring the world’s most beautiful or ‘aesthetically significant’ goal of the year.

But for him, the NGAs are just as important for the work they do to recognise the graft behind non-league football.

“I’ve never been to an awards ceremony before, so to come away with an award as well is even better,” he said.

“It’s a great occasion and it’s good recognition for the people that do the hard work behind the scenes.”
