IN-FORM back Dean Hammond is determined to keep his hot streak going as Worcester Warriors prepare to launch their Anglo-Welsh Cup campaign.

The potent wing scored back-to-back braces last week and is aiming to add to his try-tally when Warriors take on Sale Sharks at Sixways on Friday (7.45pm).

Two of his tries came in Worcester Cavaliers’ 32-6 victory over Wasps last Monday before continuing his fine form at Harlequins five days later.

Despite his stand-out showing for Cavaliers, Hammond was not named in the initial 23-man squad for the Aviva Premiership clash last Saturday.

But when full-back Chris Pennell was forced to pull out through illness, the 25-year-old was drafted onto the bench.

And when called upon with 15 minutes to go and Worcester trailing 38-18 at The Stoop, Hammond made an immediate impact.

He scored with almost his first touch of the ball before dotting down for a second try as Warriors claimed two bonus points from a 41-35 defeat.

“I found out (that I was going to be on the bench) at the hotel (on the morning before the game),” Hammond said.

“Things happen like that and you have got to be mentally switched on and ready for a game.

“I was lucky that a lot of action came my way when I got on the field which made it quite enjoyable.

“From the team’s perspective, it was nice to get the two bonus points and as a winger it's always good to cross the line.

“Hopefully there will be more to come.”

Warriors are expected to rest their first-team regulars for the next two games which also includes an Anglo-Welsh Cup tie at Quins a week on Sunday.

But Hammond, who has scored three tries in five Premiership appearances this term, is hoping to play in the cup competition as he bids to strengthen his case for a starting jersey.

“It would be very nice to feature in these games with Sale at home and then back to Quins a week later,” Hammond said.

“It is always good to play and keep the momentum going, the match fitness up and put on the jersey again.

“The competition will give a few guys who have not had too much game-time an opportunity to play and some of the youngsters a chance.

“It will prove where the club is in terms of depth while giving some guys rest as well.”
