WORCESTER Warriors' hopes of landing fly-half Duncan Weir ahead of Saturday's clash with Gloucester have been dashed after he was recalled by Edinburgh.

The Scotland international was set to join Worcester on a loan deal until the end of the season this week.

However, due to a string of injuries and international call-ups at Edinburgh Warriors have confirmed Weir has been called back by the Pro14 outfit prior to a deal being confirmed.

A club spokesman said: "After spending the weekend with Warriors ahead of a proposed short-term loan, Duncan has been recalled by Edinburgh due to injuries and international selection for other members of their squad.

"He is set to feature for them against Ulster on Friday."

But Edinburgh director of rugby Richard Cockerill has also confirmed Weir will be leaving the Scottish side at the end of the campaign.

Back-rower Cornell du Preez, scrum-half Sam Hidalgo-Clyne and stand-off Jason Tovey will also depart in the summer.

Cockerill said: “Unfortunately, because Jason and Phil Burleigh are out injured and Blair Kinghorn will be retained by the Scotland team, I’m bringing Duncan back for this weekend because we need that coverage – we can’t expose ourselves for the next week or so.

“But Duncan needs an opportunity and there’s an opportunity at Worcester.

"Now because he is a good man, we’ll let him take that opportunity, because he needs to go and find a new club.

"Where possible, we’ll try and help any player to move on in a positive way.

Speaking after Warriors' 6-5 win at Exeter Chiefs last Saturday director of rugby Alan Solomons said he was looking to "finalise" the loan move today.

Ahead of the proposed deal, Weir also took to Twitter yesterday to say he was "excited" to be joining Worcester after injured back rower Marco Mama revealed the 26-year-old's arrival at Sixways on social media.

"Thanks for the messages over the last few days," said Weir who has been nursing an abdominal injury.

"Excited to be joining Warriors until the season.

"Thanks to everyone Edinburgh unfortunate I couldn’t have pulled on the jersey more this season due to injury. Can’t wait get back playing."
