WORCESTERSHIRE County Cricket Club are to honour their former player, Phil Hughes, by wearing a special one-off kit for the pre-season trip to Abu Dhabi in March.

Hughes died at the age of 25 after being struck on the neck by a delivery while playing cricket in Australia in late November.

He played for Worcestershire for the majority of the 2012 season and was a successful and popular figure with his team-mates and supporters and due to return to New Road in 2013 before his Ashes call-up that summer.

The county players lined up their bats in The View reception in honour of Hughes and a book of condolence was opened.

Now new Worcestershire kit sponsors Canterbury have designed a special outfit for skipper Daryl Mitchell and his side to wear during the 11-day trip, starting tomorrow.

The kit worn by the players will subsequently be auctioned off with proceeds going to a charity of the Hughes family choice.

Worcestershire commercial director Jon Graham said: "Following the tragic death of Phil Hughes at the back end of last year, without doubt it hit the club and the staff really hard.

"Phil was such a popular guy and, when things like that happen, you want to do something that is befitting of the individual and commemorate his name.

"For the trip to Abu Dhabi, we thought it would be a good idea to develop a one-off kit in honour of Phil's name.

"We have worked alongside Canterbury to design that and I'm sure the lads will be proud to wear that kit."

"All the playing kit that the lads wear in Abu Dhabi will be auctioned off throughout the course of the 150th year "All proceeds will go to a charity of Phil Hughes' families choice.

"It is about recognising a very good player for Worcestershire and what an absolute legend of a man he was.

"We will also have a very limited run of the Phil Hughes kit that we will sell in the club shop, probably no more than 50 items."

Worcestershire director of Cricket Steve Rhodes said: "It gives the players more than anything an opportunity to pay their respects and honour Phil.

"He was not just a great bloke and exciting Worcestershire player, but also a mate of theirs as well. That's a good reason for doing it."
