JOSH Tongue's superb performance at the SWALEC Stadium has certainly sparked plenty of interest in terms of revisiting previous outstanding debuts by Worcestershire players in the County Championship.

It has already been revealed that Tongue was the first Worcestershire player to take five wickets in an innings on his Championship debut since Imran Arif - also against Glamorgan in 2008.

But now it has emerged that 19-year-old Tongue is the first teenager to achieve that feat for the County for 12 years.

That honour previously fell to Stuart Wedge who was also 19 when returning figures of 31-5-112-5 on his first Championship appearance against Essex at New Road in September 2005.

Wedge, like Tongue, was also an academy product and the Wolverhampton-born player was a left arm bowler who came on first change in that game behind Kabir Ali and David Wigley.

His victims included Ravi Bopara, James Foster and Graham Napier and his performance impressed director of cricket Steve Rhodes who was in his first season at the helm.

Rhodes said after that game: "Stuart swings the ball a bit and what I was impressed with was that he stuck to the game plan.

"He looked to bowl in good areas and he impressed me with his control for someone so young and making his Championship debut."

Wedge played a total of four first class, one List A and one T20 match for the County before being released at the end of the 2007 season.

He then played for Herefordshire and still is part of the Himley side in the Birmingham League.
