Members of Cookhill WI were treated to a very fascinating and participating talk from Sally Beech about “colours”. How many of us open that wardrobe door and are greeted by a variety of styles and colours of clothes , items that we have bought on impulse and those retained as favourite pieces, but still conclude “I’ve got nothing to wear”.

So members were keen to learn about what colours actually suited them. Sally started her talk by asking us all to pick a colour swatch from the huge array she had laid out on the table. She asked us to select a favourite colour, one that evoked a memory or for any other reason. It was interesting to listen to members ‘reasons for selecting their colour – red because it gave confidence, green evoked memories of childhood. Sally talked us through how to choose the colours that complimented each individual, mindful that our complexion, hair colour, etc changes over the years, so something that was suitable 30 years ago probably isn’t so appropriate now. There are so many shades of one colour, for example, red can be deep and dramatic through to light and subtle, but she assured us there is a “red” for everyone.

To test if a colour is right for you, hold it under your chin and see if it lightens your face or casts a shadow. To demonstrate how some colours suit or not, a willing volunteer allowed Sally to drape swatchs across her shoulders showing members which were “good” colours and those to be avoided. After her talk Sally was pleased to chat individually to members about their own choices. For social time it seemed appropriate to test members’ knowledge about fashion designers –giving the designer’s logo, and members to name the designer. The secretary informed members of the many activities and events coming up in the next couple of months. The meeting closed with members rushing home to sort out their wardrobes! Cookhill WI meets the second Wednesday of each month 7.30pm at Cookhill Village Hall. New members very welcome.
