A SPA church choir will be raising the roof when they attempt to sing more than 150 hymns written by Charles Wesley in celebration of the 300th anniversary of his birth.

Droitwich Methodist Church is holding the event on Saturday, October 6, from 9am to 4.30pm. Charles Wesley was the foremost hymnwriter in the history of Methodism and the choir will be marking the anniversary of his birth by endeavouring to sing all of his hymns in the current Hymns and Psalms book.

Residents are welcome to share the celebration for all or part of the day and to join in singing or be serenaded.

There will also be a chance to sponsor the choir. Any funds raised will be used to help finance a residential weekend exploring the use of creative arts in worship and the continuing improvement programme for the church buildings.

Choir leader David Stanbury said: "Charles Wesley was the young brother of John Wesley, who is regarded by many as the founder of Methodism. Charles also played an important role in the movement and he wrote at least 6,000 hymns during his lifetime, many of which are still sung."

He added: "There are over 150 of Charles Wesley's hymns in the current Methodist hymn book Hymns and Psalms, some well known and some less so, and we hope to try to sing all of them on October 6."

Refreshments will be served throughout the day and there will also be a cakestall and bookstall.
