A BRIERLEY Hill care home has been told it 'requires improvement' by standards chiefs from the Care Quality Commission.

Amberley Care Home, based on Stourbridge Road, received an overall rating of 'requires improvement' by the Care Quality Commission who visited the site unannounced on October 17.

The inspection was 'prompted in part' by a resident suffering serious injuries at the home.

In a description of the home at the beginning of the report, the inspector stated: "This incident is subject to an investigation and as a result this inspection did not examine the circumstances of the incident. However, the information shared with CQC about the incident indicated potential concerns about the management of risk of falls. This inspection examined those risks."

The report, which was published on December 11, stated that the Stourbridge Road home 'requires improvement' across each of the areas it assesses on safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness and how it is led.

The home, which looks after up to 25 people living with dementia aged over 65, had previously been rated as 'good' after an inspection in November 2015.

In the latest report, Amberley was criticised for not 'consistently' managing risks to people's safety and not mitigating risks to ensure people received safe care.

The overview of the report stated: "People’s healthcare needs were not effectively managed to maintain their wellbeing."

Inspectors added that 'the service was not always caring' and 'we saw examples where people’s dignity was not always maintained.'

Care plans were said to be 'not detailed to enable staff to provide personalised care' and staff were reported to have 'gaps' in their training and knowledge even though they had received training.

However, the report praised the staff and manager of the home as 'caring' and 'kind' and stated that they had been told by users and relatives that their 'dignity and privacy was respected'.

The report also said that staff felt supported and the manager and provider were 'approachable', while 'people were supported to make choices about their daily lives.'

The incident which prompted the inspection is currently under investigation.

Amberley Care Home did not wish to comment when approached by the News.
