A BROMSGROVE-based detective sergeant has received a divisional commendation for his work on a Redditch murder inquiry.

DS Gary Mole, currently based in Bromsgrove CID, worked on Operation Ebony, the investigation into the murder of prison officer Naomi Phipps.

DS Mole, who received a Probationer of the Year award in 2003, was commended for his leadership, detective ability and determination in the investigation into the death of Miss Phipps, which occurred on October 22, 2006.

On August 24, 2007, Miss Phipps' neighbour Matthew Doman was found guilty of murder and sentenced to a life term with a minimum period of 20 years before parole could be considered.

The nomination report said it was a complicated case into which went a great deal of work to build a comprehensive file.

DS Mole's main responsibility was to prepare a full and detailed file of evidence, ensuring that there was meticulous attention to detail and incorporating evidence from all the relevant experts, so that the file was of the highest standard.

His positive attitude, diligence and sustained high performance earned the full confidence of the senior investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Dave Morgan.

Miss Phipps' family and the prosecuting QC were highly complimentary about the first class work carried out by DS Mole.

DCI Morgan said: "Throughout this investigation I was very impressed with DS Mole's dedication to duty, professionalism and his drive to succeed on this case.

"He has demonstrated clear leadership skills, detective ability and determination to ensure the conviction of an extremely dangerous man."

Miss Phipps' family added: "The family are delighted to hear of Gary's commendation. During the course of the investigation, we as a family had lots of difficult times, and we found Gary helpful, informative, and above all a calming influence."

DS Mole will receive his certificate at a divisional commendations evening on Wednesday, November 7.
