A WEAPON surrender bin has been installed near a Rubery supermarket.

West Midlands Assistant Senior Police and Crime Commissioner Ashley Bertie opened the bin, which is located by the Morrison's store.

Mr Bertie said: "We have seen an 85 per cent increase in violent crime since 2012.

"We are going to do everything we possibly can to get weapons off our streets and protect people."

People can deposit weapons at the bin securely and anonymously.

Richard Burden, MP for Birmingham Northfield, added: "Every person who deposits a blade in this bin or any of the other bins across the West Midlands is one more person who is saying very clearly that knives have got no place on our streets."

The installation of the bin is part of the Police & Crime Commissioner's office's pledge to place one in every borough.

Sergeant Chris Thompson, of Longbridge Police, added: "Hopefully each one of the knives collected in this bin will be a life saved."
