Cows and fallen trees brought delays to rail services around Hereford last night.

Animals on the line a few miles east of Hereford Railway Station caused disruption on all services heading to and from the Midlands from 5pm.

Jordan Baker was on board one train when he and fellow passengers were told that cows were on the line shortly after 5pm.

Their train was stopped after being damaged in the collision with the cattle.

The Hereford Times understands that a number of cattle had to be put down after being seriously injured.

The train, which had been heading to its destination in Hereford, returned to Ledbury before it was examined.

Rail passengers were then put on buses and taxis to complete their journeys and many did not get home until after 10pm.

And despite the delays, Mr Baker was full of praise for the way he and fellow passengers were treated by the Great Western Rail team who provided free food and drink to all those affected.

There were further problems last night on the line between Hereford and Abergavenny after a tree came down.

National Rail said services were affected until 10.30pm.
