A STOURBRIDGE hospice boss has praised and thanked loyal volunteers for their dedication after the charity was presented with the highest honour a voluntary group can receive in the UK.

Mary Stevens Hospice, which provides care for people with life-limiting and terminal illnesses across the borough, was awarded The Queens Award for Voluntary Services - the MBE for voluntary groups - in June and it was officially presented at a ceremony at Birmingham Hippodrome just over a week ago.

The top accolade was presented to volunteers from the Oldswinford hospice on Sunday October 20 by John Crabtree OBE - the Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands.

Steven Jackson, CEO of Mary Stevens Hospice, said 70 volunteers from the hospice and shops proudly attended the event and he added: "Sir Winston Churchill said 'we make a living by what we get but we make a life by what we give'.

"Our army of volunteers make a difference to so many people’s lives, at the most difficult of times, by what they give.

"This hugely prestigious award from Her Majesty recognises their incredible dedication and we are so grateful to them."
