A MAN caught on video using racist slurs while travelling on a tram has been handed a prison sentence.

Ryan John Healey, 29, of Porchester Drive, Radcliffe was charged with racially aggravated public order following a video which appeared on social media.

The clip showed Mr Healey using the slurs on the Bury Metrolink line on Saturday, December 7, before he left the tram at Radcliffe.

It followed last week's Manchester derby between Manchester United and Manchester City.

It appears to show a United fan saying of his rivals are "run by P**i's with P**i money".

When he was confronted by passengers, he said: "You like blowing up the arena do you? That's what funds you."

He appeared at Manchester and Salford Magistrate Court yesterday and was sentenced to five weeks in prison and a victim surcharge of £122.

An application was made for a Criminal Behaviour Order and Football Banning Order, both of which will be heard in the New Year.

Chief inspector Matt Bailey-Smith said: “We do not tolerate any form of racism or hate crime and will deal with incidents like this accordingly.

"One of the aims of the Transport Unit is to improve public confidence and reduce criminality and anti-social behaviour across the transport systems of Greater Manchester."
