Firefighters rushed to tackle a "suspicious" blaze at a Southampton cash machine this morning.

Emergency services received a call at around 2.30am with reports of a fire at the Santander bank in Burgess Road.

Crews from St Mary's, Redbridge and Eastleigh Fire Stations were on the scene near to Southampton University.

Four engines and an aerial ladder were in attendance with the stop message coming just after 4am.

No one was reported as injured and the cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious.

According to Hampshire Fire and Rescue Services, the blaze is being investigated by police and the security team at Southampton University.

A University spokesman said: “The police are investigating a fire at a bank branch in one of our buildings.

“All affected students evacuated the building safely and returned to their accommodation once Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it was safe to do so.

“We are assisting the police with their investigation and are grateful to the emergency services for dealing with the incident so quickly.”

A spokesperson for Santander said: "We can confirm that an incident took place at our Southampton University branch in the early hours of this morning and we are supporting the police with their investigations. We are sorry for the inconvenience while the branch remains closed and we are working to re-open it as soon as possible. Should customers require counter services in the meantime, they can visit our branch at 1 Shirley High Street, SO15 3TE or their local post office, or choose to manage their account using internet, telephone or mobile banking.”
