DRIVE-IN cinema operators are hoping to bring their big screens back to Bromsgrove after the scheme was labelled a blockbuster success this summer.

More than 1,000 moviegoers watched a host of famous flicks across two weekends at Sanders Park in August.

The movie experience was brought to the park by Blue Sky Cinema in partnership with Bromsgrove District Council’s parks and events team in a bid to provide a lockdown-friendly activity for residents.

Ian Taylor, managing director of Blue Sky Cinema, said: “I’d like to thank Bromsgrove Council for providing the opportunity for Blue Sky Cinema to bring these great value movie experiences to local people at Sanders Park.

"The feedback from visitors has been fantastic and I really hope that the drive-in movies can become a regular feature in Bromsgrove’s events programme.

"Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket and helped make the event a success. We hope we’ve brought some fun and happiness to you during this unusual time.”

Almost 20 films, including musicals such as Grease and Mamma Mia, modern movies like Joker and Rocketman, and all-time favourites such as Back To The Future and Jurassic Park, were shown.

Reviews from residents were overwhelmingly positive with some hoping the cinema would return for special occasions like Halloween and Christmas.

One said: "Fantastic experience. Would recommend this to all my friends and family. Great set up, sound was amazing and most helpful staff taking care of your every need."

“First visit to a drive-in cinema and couldn't fault it. Great view and sound quality. Felt totally safe and will definitely come again," added another reviewer.

Bromsgrove District Council's Cllr Phil Thomas, whose portfolio covers leisure and cultural services, said he was delighted by the success of the initiative.

He added: “I must say a huge thank you to our Parks and Events Team who worked tirelessly alongside contractors to give some enjoyment to our residents at a time when so many have had so much taken away.

"The comments speak for themselves and it was clearly very well received.

“The team thought outside of the box to bring something exciting and different to our park.

"Although many of our usual events have already been cancelled due to crowding and Covid restrictions, I’ve no doubt they will be creative and continue to bring enjoyable, positive entertainment to Bromsgrove during these strange and difficult times.”
