SNOW that fell overnight in Worcestershire saw residents waking up to travel disruption throughout the county this morning.

Roads were closed across Worcestershire, including the A38 from Martin Hussingtree to the Copcut, which was blocked due to lorries being stuck, as well as Hindlip Lane which was closed following the snowfall on Sunday night.

A crash also closed two lanes on the M5 southbound between J5 Droitwich and J6 Worcester this afternoon, which reopened later in the day, and First Bus confirmed service 35 was unable to operate, while many other services faced delays.

Today's scheduled bin collections in Worcester were also postponed after the snowfall made it unsafe for the city council’s waste collection vehicles to go out.

Despite the disruption, people still enjoying their Christmas breaks made the most of it, building snowmen and tobogganing.

Gemma Painter’s three-year-old son Leo had his first experience with snow in Worcester. Gemma said: “He saw it for the first time and was so excited, we went out to play at 7am. He was absolutely mesmerised he was jumping up and and down at the door so excited so we had to get wrapped up and go and play.”

Adam Ward’s children Kaiden, 13 and Kiera 10, also ventured out to play in Warndon.

Adam said: “They absolutely love going out in the snow, and couldn’t wait to get out the house and play.”

Following the heavy snowfall on Sunday night, weather warnings for snow and ice remain in place until Thursday.

Today's scheduled bin collections (which were due to catch up on collections that normally would have happened on December 25) will now be made on Monday January 4.

A spokesman for Worcester City Council said: “We apologise to residents for this inconvenience, especially as this coming Friday’s collections had already been rescheduled for Saturday, January 2. Residents who put their bin out for collection today are asked to take it back in.

“We will collect any side waste that people put out on January 4, when we do the catch-up collections. The Household Recycling Centres are open although residents are advised to check travel information before setting off.”

The county’s operations patrol unit has advised to only go out if necessary.
