There’s a ripple of resentment disturbing the waters of Arrow Valley Lake in Redditch.

Fantastic pictures by our Camera Club members of otters swimming through its waters have been a big hit online, with many comments about how good it is to see these beautiful animals swimming.

But not all the comments have been positive.

One on our Camera Club page on Facebook raised the issue of concern among anglers about the otters eating the fish in the lake.

“There have apparently already been threats against them according to 1 of the water bailiffs. Mind you, this hasn't been helped by him stating they have been there for 4 months and taken 10000 fish!”

And Redditch Council have confirmed there have been mutterings.

A council spokesperson said: “The Council, or our partners Rubicon have had no complaints about the otters, of which we believe there are five, aside from informal comments from mildly concerned anglers.”

And are the otters causing a problem among fish stocks. “I guess they are just being otters!”

We take that as meaning there’s room for otters, fish and anglers at the lake - and the otters are definitely a big new attraction.

Otter facts:

Otters eat about 1.5kg of food a day - up to 25% of their bodyweight

Their diet is mainly fish, but they also eat wildfowl, amphibians and small mammals

It is argued they tend to take slower fish, rather than the game fish anglers try to catch

While fish and otter populations are balanced where the otters have lived continually, in places where they have been reintroduced an effect on fish stock is noticeable

They have the densest fur of any animal.
