MOTORISTS who illegally park on the pavement by a war memorial in Aston Fields are being warned they will face fines if caught.

The issue has been brought to light by campaigners from the Bromsgrove Liberal Democrat group, who say drivers are obstructing residents with pushchairs or wheelchairs.

They have called on the council to take action to stop cars parking fully on the pavement outside the memorial on the corner of Finstall Road in an attempt to avoid the nearby double yellow lines.

One of the campaigners, Sam Evans, said: “As someone who has lived in Aston Fields for many years I recognise the difficulties with parking in the area.

"There are many cars parked on our roads for access to Aston Fields Middle School, the train station and our local shops, bars and takeaways.

"However, residents have raised concerns about vehicles that are parking wholly on the pavement by the roundabout to avoid parking on the double yellow lines at the end of the road.

Fellow Lib Dem campaigner Dr David Nicholl shared his colleague’s concerns adding: “With cars parking fully on the pavement it is difficult for pedestrians with prams or in wheelchairs to pass through.

"This has been going on for a good while so hopefully the council will act.”

After approaching the council for comment, a spokesperson said they would be monitoring the issue.

Guy Revans, Bromsgrove District Council’s Head of Environmental Services, said: “Parking on pavements does not avoid double yellows.

"The pavement is part of the public highway along with the road, and any parking restrictions like double yellow lines apply to both the pavement and the road.

"We were not aware of this issue but this area is regularly patrolled and we’ve notified our civil parking enforcement team of the concerns raised.

"Parking enquiries can be made to bdcparking@bromsgrove.gov.uk or 01386 565009.”
