WE all know that Worcestershire is home to a lot of famous faces such as Harry Styles and John Bonham- but did you also know about the sport speople that were born and raised here?

From cricketing legends, to athletes who represented the country in the Olympics, plenty of incredible athletes hail from Worcester.

Here are just some sportsmen and women who were raised right on your doorstep- how many were you aware of?

Alex Gregory

Gregory is a double Olympic gold medalist who found fame through rowing.

Although he wasn’t born in Worcestershire, Alex Gregory grew up near Broadway and rowed with the Evesham Rowing Club from 2000-2005.

He won gold in the men’s four at both the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics.

He also attended Prince Henry's High School.

Daryl Mitchell

Daryl is a first-class cricketer from Badsey in Worcestershire.

He currently plays for Worcestershire and has been a high ranking member of the team, even managing the club for a while.

Mitchell went to Prince Henry’s High School in Evesham before studying at the University of Worcester.

Lesley Charles

Worcester-born Lesley Charles is a former tennis player with a lot of sporting accolades to her name.

She made her name in the 70s when she competed in the Australian Open and even came second in the Wimbledon mixed doubles competition.

Ernest Payne

This Worcester Olympian, alongside his cycling team, secured a gold medal for Team GB at the 1908 Olympic games.

Payne was nicknamed ‘The Worcester Wonder’ for his talent and accomplishments in the world of cycling.

A replica of his gold medal is currently in Worcester City Museum for residents to admire.

Jimmy Davis

Jimmy Davis was a footballer from Redditch.

He has an extensive football career in his lifetime, playing for Manchester United and even the England national team.

The 21-year-old was viewed as a rising star with plenty of talent- but tragedy struck in 2003 when he was tragically killed in a car crash.

Declan Fitzpatrick

Fitzpatrick is a former rugby union player for Ireland and Ulster but he was born in Bromsgrove.

He was a prop for the team but was forced to retire in 2015 after medical advice from doctors.

Godfrey Brown

As well as being a headmaster in Worcester for 20 years, Brown also made his mark as an athlete in the Olympics.

Back in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, he secured a silver in the 400m sprint and then gold in the 4x400m relay race.

The Worcester Civic Society awarded him with a blue plaque in 2013, which sits on The Royal Grammar School in Worcester.

Lloyd Glasspool

Lloyd is a talented tennis player from Redditch.

He is currently ranked 150th in the world for doubles.

In the past, Glasspool has competed in Wimbledon and he has even played doubles matches with Andy Murray himself.
