A NEW speed limit could be introduced on a section of the A435 in Wythall if the proposal is passed by Worcestershire County Council.

Aled Luckman, county councillor for Alvechurch and Adam Kent, county councillor for Wythall have proposed a 50mph speed limit between the junction with Becketts Fram Roundabout which is currently 60mph speed limit and the existing 50mph speed limit north of M42 Junction three.

The plans, which are currently in a consultation stage with relevant parties, is the first of Councillor Luckman's speed curbing measures across the ward.

Cllr Luckman said: "The difficulty with the A435 is that there a lot of residential properties along the road, so its a danger when they are driving to pull out on to a 60mph road.

"There is also a small lane called Barkers Lane which is a 30mph speed limit which is a sharp left hand turn off the A435 - it just isn't safe.

"There has been a number of accidents between the M42 and Becketts Farm Roundabout so I needed to do something about it."

Cllr Luckman added: "This solution is quick and easily enforceable and has full support from residents.

"Myself and Cllr Kent met with West Mercia Police Crime Commissioner (PCC), Jon Campion to discuss the issue and he also fully supports the reduced speed limit.

"This is the first stage of trying to cut speeding across Wythall and Alvechurch, with more plans in the pipeline."

As well as being Worcestershire County Council's youngest councillor, at 21 years old, Cllr Luckman was also elected to be the youngest ever chairman of the West Mercia Police and Crime Panel on July 25.

Its role is to maintain a regular check and balance on the performance of the PCC and is responsible for handling complaints about the conduct of the PCC and its deputy.
