BROMSGROVE High Street was full of LGBT flags and informative stalls as the town celebrates its first Pride event.

Hundreds of people graced the High Street to make history as people donned LGBT flags and colourful outfits to show their support for Pride.

The street was filled with music all afternoon as local artists took to the stage to champion the event.

Many charities either from Bromsgrove or the wider Worcestershire area set up information stalls to show their solidarity and raise awareness of the support groups available.

Gary Jones, founder of Birmingham AIDS and HIV Memorial started the project after watching Channel 4 drama ‘It’s a Sin’ which brought back prolific memories for Gary of the AIDS epidemic.

“I put it out on Facebook and we have got planning permission, so its all systems go to get it built by June next year,” said Gary.

Worcestershire LGBT group, Out2gether, were on hand to raise awareness of their monthly sessions which include a book club, brunch and a creative writing group.

Co secretary, Steve Martin said the group ‘gives peoples another way to make friends outside an alcohol heavy atmosphere’.

Bromsgrove Pride successfully gained funding from the council’s small grants scheme as well as councillor funds from Cllr Kyle Daisley and Platform Housing Group.

The money was used to buy market stalls and pay singers and artists who performed on the day – any funds left over were donated to LGBT charities.

Chairperson of the committee, Saz Mulhall said: “There’s a lot of people that this event has meant a lot to.

“Some people that live locally have had issues with coming and their sexuality, problems at home and school so this has been so important to make people feel welcome.

“Everyone keeps talking about another Bromsgrove Pride next year- so fingers crossed!”
