HEALTH Secretary Sajid Javid has paid tribute to Conservative MP Sir David Amess who has died after being stabbed multiple times.

A suspect has been arrested after the Tory veteran was stabbed several times during a “very distressing” incident at a constituency surgery in Essex.

The 69-year-old victim, who has been an MP since 1983, was fatally injured at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex midday on Friday.

Paying tribute, Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid said on Twitter: “Devastated to learn of Sir David Amess' murder.

“A great man, a great friend, and a great MP killed while fulfilling his democratic role.

“My heart goes out to Julia, his family, and all who loved him. Let us remember him and what he did with his life.”

Also reacting to the news, Cllr Kyle Daisley, Worcestershire County Councillor for Bromsgrove South said: “All elected representatives should be able to go about their work without the fear of physical or verbal attacks.

"My thoughts and prayers are with MP Sir David Amess family and friends during this very difficult time after the horrific attack today in Essex.”
