THERE is ‘no real evidence’ to deny a Rednal pub the opportunity to open until late – despite local resident’s fears of an increase in antisocial behaviour.

Speaking on October 27 at a licensing meeting to determine whether The Old Hare and Hounds on Lickey Road could remain open until midnight Sunday to Thursday and 1am Friday and Saturday, a representative for the pub argued residents were objecting over potential, not actual, nuisance.

Several local residents and a local councillor have expressed concerns at the proposals, and have written to the committee urging them to refuse the application.

Concerns included the potential for antisocial behaviour, loud noise and ‘rowdy’ pub guests, with the impact on the nearby Elliot Gardens mentioned by local Cllr Delaney in his letter to the committee.

However a spokesperson for the pub argued they have never had any issues with local residents, and wouldn’t expect to have any if the application were granted.

“He’s mentioned noise and disturbance caused to elderly residents over the road late at night, noise of people drinking outside, car doors slamming etc,” she said.

“But I’ve checked the history on our system, we’ve dealt with this premises for a long time, and I wasn’t able to see any issues.

“Mr Prescott mentions antisocial behaviour that might arise from extended opening hours, and then another resident mentions JoJo Jims from next door, but there are some issues in identifying whether there are actually any noise issues that apply to this premises – again, it just references the potential noise, but obviously we have to look at the evidence.

“The application is to give some flexibility in terms of being able to operate that little bit later.

“It’s not intended that it would be used all the time but I think if we get into the realms of limiting this to certain days I’m mindful of the fact that I don’t feel there’s really any evidence to justify that.

“We’ll always work with residents, the management will always work with residents, and I’d expect them if there was an issue to be in contact – we’d be more than happy to meet with them and we’d be more than happy to take reasonable steps.”

A decision is expected within five working days.
