A Coronation Street star is reportedly set to quit the long-running ITV soap after 26 years.

Legend of the cobbles David Neilson who portrays fan favourite Roy Cropper could leave Weatherfield behind as his character struggles to deal with the aftermath of the soap’s Halloween special episodes.

Roy is battling his conscience after knowing it was Abi’s gun that killed Natasha and hiding what he knew from police.

Roy, who runs Roy’s Rolls has been linked with an exit from the show since his on-screen wife Hayley passed away due to cancer some years ago.

The character signs his estate over to his niece Nina before revealing he is taking a job as a chef in South America.

Other characters beg him to stay but it is not yet clear whether he takes their advice.  

David Neilson has portrayed Roy Cropper since 1995 and has been a constant figure in the soap ever since.

The actor enjoyed a successful career as an odd job actor prior to his role in Corries and even starred in BBC soap Eastenders in the early 90s.

Coronation Street continues to air on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:30pm and 8:30pm.
