Residents living near an illegal traveller encampment in Claines have banded together to clean up the mess they left behind.

After enforcement officers ensured that the travellers were removed from Cherry Tree Park in Claines, locals who live in nearby houses worked together to clean the area.

One resident said: "It was a disgusting experience.

"They were vile. They urinated on flower beds and left behind dirty nappies.

"On Friday night, they got very rowdy and loud and the children were knocking on people's doors. People were quite scared and worried.

"It's a civil matter so police couldn't move them on so we got enforcement officers in to do it. Six enforcement officers came out and gave them a time limit that they had to vacate by.

"The travellers went at around midday on Saturday but they left behind security tags (from clothing) everywhere, smashed glass and toilet paper.

"We made sure we acted quickly so that it won't happen again but measures need to be put in place to stop people using that land in the future."

Another resident in the area said: "My friend, who is an older, disabled lady, saw them and asked them where they lived.

"When they couldn't give her a street name they threatened to beat her up.

"They left everything, loads of dog poo and toilet paper.

"Police came round and told us all to lock our doors and windows and now people are using their cars to block the entrances so that they can't come back."

Other residents said that while they weren't involved in the clean-up, they had seen the mess that was left behind and knew that people were using their cars to block the entrances to the land.

A spokesperson from Gwilliam's Farm Shop added: "They came in and asked us to supply them with water.

"We said no and then they got quite aggressive and nasty and threatened to put all of their caravans on our car park.

"They left behind a lot of waste like pieces of children's clothing, food that they obviously didn't want.

"It wasn't very nice."
