THE starting gun has fired in the contest to replace Boris Johnson in No 10, could Bromsgrove MP, Sajid Javid be in the running?

The race to replace Mr Johnson has not officially started yet, but MPs Tom Tugendhat and Suella Braverman have already announced they will run.

Sajid Javid is yet to confirm whether he is thinking about throwing his hat into the ring but has been a name hotly discussed in the run-up to the contest.

Along with Rishi Sunak, Mr Javid handed in his resignation on Tuesday, July 5, causing a flurry of MPs to follow suit.

He stuck the knife in further with a blistering speech in the Commons, saying: “This week again, we have reason to question the truth and integrity of what we’ve all been told.

“And at some point, we have to conclude that enough is enough.

“I believe that point is now.”

The clear favourite to replace Mr Johnson among Tory party members is Ben Wallace, according to a new YouGov poll.

Sajid Javid comes in at ninth place with just four per cent of members wanting to see him replace the Prime Minister.

However, he has previously held several government roles including ministerial roles in housing, business, and culture before becoming home secretary in 2018 then chancellor in 2019, and health secretary in the middle of the pandemic.

Javid has served Bromsgrove since 2010, winning a huge majority over labour in the 2019 general election, but do his constituents think he should run as PM?

The Advertiser asked readers on Facebook if they think Mr Javid should run in the Conservative Party leadership contest and the reception was mixed.

Many in short said ‘No’ and claimed he does not “do enough” for Bromsgrove as his constituency and isn’t “a man of the people”.

One Facebook user wrote: "No thank you. He's done nothing for us but no doubt we'll be seeing him around again soon to rally up support."

While another posted: “Having had personal experience of his "help" on a local level, it was poor, ill-informed, a basic standard reply and basically "I can't do anything to help".... "but please don't hesitate to contact me with any further issues...." so it's thanks, but no thanks from me.”

However, Lawrence Richard said: "We are choosing between Tories here but maybe he would try to do a good job with integrity I'd hope. Something is missing in Westminster on all sides.

"I hope he puts his name forward and I wish him luck. The best of the bunch."

Mr Javid made it to the final four in the contest to replace Theresa May as Tory leader in 2019 but dropped out and subsequently endorsed Mr Johnson.

If he does decide to run in the contest, will he achieve success this time around?
