THE Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay is to arrive in Bromsgrove’s Sanders Park on Saturday, July 23 marking a historical moment for the town.

The full route has been revealed which will see the baton arrive in the park at 9 am.

Five baton bearers will carry the baton through Sanders Park with Bromsgrove district's nominated person, Paralympic gold medallist Leanna Horne, being the final carrier.

Everyone is encouraged to wear Commonwealth colours to the events in the park which will bring demonstrations from Bromsgrove Gymnastics Club, the Music Bus from Seven Arts, and Bromsgrove Festival, as a second royal legacy is also celebrated on the day: the twentieth anniversary of the park’s Jubilee Bandstand.

The bandstand has been celebrating community voices since it was commissioned by Bromsgrove District Council for the Queens’ Golden Jubilee in 2002.

The baton will leave for its next destination, Kidderminster, at 9.25 am but bandstand events will continue through to 11 am.

Cllr Michael Thompson, whose portfolio at Bromsgrove District Council includes leisure and culture, said: “We’re delighted to welcome the baton relay to Bromsgrove at an event that will also celebrate 20 years of the Jubilee Bandstand.

“Everyone is welcome. It’s a summer to remember for sports and events in the district and nationwide.

“Leanna has worked tirelessly to promote disability sports across the district and beyond, she is an inspiration to us all.

“I hope residents will join in and cheer her and all the baton bearers on as they wind their way to Birmingham 2022.”

Leanna Horne said: “It’s an absolute honour to be involved in such a big way in this hugely historic event for Birmingham, right on our doorstep and I feel very proud to be representing Bromsgrove.

“Personally, I hope it will help inspire local people to get involved, enjoy and succeed in a sport.”
