THREE car parks in Bromsgrove have been earmarked for development as part of the council’s regeneration plans for the town centre.

Churchfields Car Park and School Drive Car Park could be converted into residential development, while Stourbridge Road Car Park is earmarked for either a commercial development or a mixed residential and commercial development.

According to a document produced for Bromsgrove District Council’s cabinet, the car parks minus Churchfields which closed last year due to anti-social behaviour issues, are significantly underused.

If the sites are converted into developments, the overall parking provision in the town would reduce by 32 per cent.

The sites form part of the ‘Bromsgrove 2040 Vision’ which will inform the council’s Local Plan preparation and the emerging Bromsgrove Centres Strategy.

The North Worcestershire Economic Development and Regeneration (NWedR) on behalf of Bromsgrove District Council has appointed Burrell Foley Fisher to produce the Bromsgrove 2040 Vision.

The document states: “BFF view is that this would not impact on the overall parking capacity because they would not expect occupiers of surrounding residential dwellings to use the car parks. Furthermore, even if a small percentage of people did use the car parks, there is still surplus capacity in the town centre.”

The first stage of the plan includes the development of the former Market Hall site for flexible office space, restaurants and bars and a Pavilion building, and site clearance on Windsor Street in preparation for residential use.

These two projects will be funded by the Levelling Up Fund grant of £14.6m and £1.6m match funding from the council.

The council has applied for funding for the clearance of Windsor Street, however, funding for the new sites will need third-party funding.

The car park on Stourbridge Road has already been the subject of a planning application by fast food giant McDonald’s.

Back in 2017, the chain put forward proposals for a two-storey drive-thru restaurant after the High Street branch closed in 2017.

The application is still ongoing.
