Plans to create a new cultural hub to boost Bromsgrove high street and the economy have been submitted.

The three-part proposal, on the site of the former market hall, was submitted by North Worcestershire Economic Development and Regeneration (NWEDR).

The plans include a multipurpose pavilion to encourage creative exhibitions and markets for community use during the day, evenings and weekends.

A separate commercial building will also provide high-quality office space, a new food and drink outlet and a rooftop restaurant adding to the night time economy and bringing more people to the high street.

Surrounding the buildings will be a public space where developers will open up and re-naturalise the Spadesbourne Brook, public seating and landscaping.

Deputy leader of Bromsgrove District Council, Sue Baxter, said: “What an exciting milestone and I want to thank everyone who took part in the consultation and gave their views.

“These next steps are vital to the future regeneration of Bromsgrove, and I am pleased we have taken our time to get to this point by listening to our residents, partners and stakeholders.”

Designed by Worcester-based One Creative and project managed by Arcadis, a large proportion of the project is funded by government cash following a successful Levelling Up Fund bid by the council and NWEDR.

Materials for the buildings are long-lasting and the space has been designed with anti-social behaviour in mind to create a safe space for everyone to enjoy.

For the last four years BirdBox, an event and community space, has used the site but is set to be replaced with the new development subject to planning permission.

Council leader, Karen May, said: “Having been at the opening of BirdBox, I am very sad it’s the end of that era, but this new development will ‘bring the outside in’, which means the community and events space will not be hampered by our weather.

“If planning permission is granted, a whole new chapter awaits Bromsgrove.”
