The Court Leet in Bromsgrove has elected a new Bailiff during its traditional Great Autumn Court meeting.

Members of the court gathered in the Cookes Rooms at Bromsgrove School to appoint Officers of the Court for the following year including choosing Philip Thomas as the new Bailiff.

The Lord of the Manor then presented him with the robe and chain of office before he took an oath to the King and the Court.

He also announced that Avoncroft Museum, St John’s Spire Appeal and the Court Leet’s Archiving Project would be the charities supported during his year in office.

The newly elected Bailiff, Mr Thomas, said: “I am honoured to be elected as Bailiff of this ancient Court and am grateful to the members for entrusting him with the responsibility.

“I am humbled to be part of the long history of the Court, and look forward to the year ahead, which will focus on tradition and fun.”

At the meeting, two new members of the jury were also elected including Rod Laight, who takes up the role of Searcher and Sealer of Leather, and Robert Pryde who will be the Carniter responsible for sampling meat and fish.

Retiring Bailiff Robert Bird thanked the Court for supporting him over the past year, which he said had been both challenging and entertaining.

He also said it had been his privilege to open the Coronation celebrations in the High Street during the summer.

Former Tythingman, Mark Robinson, who entered the Court as a Juryman and Brooklooker, was elected to the position of Reeve.

He said: "I'm very much looking forward to the year ahead and will give the Bailiff my full support during the year."
