Tributes have been paid to a talented footballer one year after his tragic death.

Cody Fisher, from Redditch, was stabbed at Crane nightclub in Digbeth, Birmingham, on Boxing Day last year whilst on a night out with his friends.

As a mark of respect, the 23-year-old's former clubs Bromsgrove Sporting FC and Stourbridge held a minute's applause before their match kicked off on Tuesday, December 26.

Black armbands were also worn at Stratford Town's game against Leamington Spa with the teams holding a minute's applause in the 23rd minute to remember Mr Fisher.

Bromsgrove Sporting vice chairman, Richard Boorn, said: "It is important that we honour the memory of Cody as a mark of respect for a friend and team member of both sides.

"We want to symbolise our love and support for his friends and family on this extremely difficult anniversary."

Popular footballer Mr Fisher, who worked as a sports coach visiting several schools including Woodrow First School and Nursery in Redditch, had played for many local teams including Bromsgrove Sporting, Stourbridge FC and Kidderminster Harriers’ academy.

Bromsgrove Sporting added that Mr Fisher will never be forgotten by those who knew him and by all of his former clubs.

Three men are due to stand trial next year for Mr Fisher's murder.

Kami Carpenter, aged 21, of no fixed address, Remy Gordon, aged 22, from Rednal and Reegan Anderson, aged 18, of no fixed address, are charged with murder and affray.

The three men have denied the charges against them.

Following Mr Fisher's death, a petition called Cody's Law was taken to Parliament after reaching more than 25,000 signatures.

The petition seeks to make metal detectors and bleed kits a lawful requirement at clubs and events.
