A community group has been left devastated after "mindless vandals" broke into an allotment in Bromsgrove last week.

A member of the group said a number of sheds at Stoke Road Allotments were broken into and the community polytunnel was slashed with a knife.

The incident happened at some time between the evening of Wednesday, April 3 and the morning of Thursday, April 4.

Allotment member Jules Evans said: "It is so upsetting that our allotment site has been the target of mindless vandalism again. Our community polytunnel was attacked with a knife and sheds were broken into. How can anyone think that this is acceptable?

"This community polytunnel is for the use of anyone and has taken months of planning and weeks of building work by volunteers. We aren't posh, we don't have loads of money, we are just local people who want to grow our own food and spend time in the fresh air."

The incident has been reported to West Mercia Police who have confirmed that they are investigating the break-in and vandalism at the allotment.

The site is an important community asset with Ms Evans discussing the importance of the allotments to the mental health and well-being of local residents in the area.

The incident has now left them feeling "vulnerable" in their safe space with the group urging people to contact the police with any information.

She added: "During lockdown, the allotments saved many people's sanity and now we feel vulnerable in a place that should be our safe space."

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police added: "We received a report on Thursday, April 4 of a burglary happening at an allotment on Stoke Road in Bromsgrove. Officers are now investigating."
