BROMSGROVE Sport and Leisure Centre has launched swim sessions to support adults living with pain management conditions, such as fibromyalgia.
The sessions will take place in a pool with warm water, making it more comfortable for individuals with chronic pain or mobility issues.
Swimming is a low-impact exercise that alleviates pressure on the joints, and it can also help to improve range of motion and flexibility. Warmer water helps to soothe and relax muscles too, which can reduce pain.
Taking place every Thursday from 12noon until 1pm, the new sessions will also have reduced capacity, creating a calmer setting for enjoying the water.
Unlike standard swim sessions, participants won’t be restricted to lanes, encouraging them to swim more freely around the pool.
The centre, which is managed by leading operator Everyone Active in partnership with Bromsgrove District Council, created the swim sessions to help people managing musculoskeletal conditions stay active.
Benjamin Betteridge, contract manager at Everyone Active, said: “We recognise it can be difficult for people living with chronic pain or reduced mobility to find an exercise regime that works for their body.
“Swimming is a fantastic option for people with these conditions, so we wanted to introduce a regular session designed specifically with those individuals in mind.
“Everyone should reap the benefits of exercise in an environment that’s right for them, so we’re delighted to introduce these weekly swim sessions to support people living with musculoskeletal conditions.”
Cabinet Member for Leisure and Climate Change, Cllr Bernard McEldowney, said: “These fantastic new sessions will give those living with pain management conditions, such as Fibromyalgia, a chance to try out swimming in a calmer environment which has a reduced capacity. This is designed to provide an exercise regime that it is highly beneficial for their bodies, and something scarcely found, so we are proud to bring it to Bromsgrove residents.”
