AN OPERATIC society is bringing a modern retelling of a classic tale to the stage this season.
Astwood Bank Operatic Society will perform Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Yeomen of the Guard at the Norbury Theatre in Droitwich.
The show will run from March 12 to 14, including a matinee performance.
The production reimagines the traditional 16th-century setting in a more contemporary era, offering a fresh take while preserving the emotional depth and musicality of the original.
Jean Chalk, director of the show, said: "I have been a member of Astwood Bank Operatic Society for 43 years and I’m delighted to be directing this year’s production of The Yeomen of the Guard.
"This performance is particularly special to me because my daughter and granddaughter are both taking principal parts."
Ms Chalk’s daughter will take on the role of Dame Carruthers, the formidable housekeeper of the Tower of London, while her granddaughter portrays Kate, Dame Carruthers’ spirited niece.
Often described as the darkest and most emotionally resonant of the Savoy Operas, The Yeomen of the Guard is widely regarded as featuring some of Sullivan’s best work.
Set within the Tower of London, the story follows a visiting troupe of performers whose arrival ignites a tangled web of romance, deception and unrequited love.
Audiences can expect a compelling blend of melancholy and humour, with the operetta’s more mature themes balanced by the distinctive wit and playful farce characteristic of Gilbert and Sullivan’s work.
The show includes beloved musical numbers such as I Have a Song to Sing, O, When a Wooer Goes a-Wooing, and Free from His Fetters Grim.
Tickets can be booked through the Norbury Theatre Box Office by calling 01905 770154 or online via the Norbury Theatre website.
