BROMSGROVE District Council’s new chairman says it is a “great honour” to take up the role for the forthcoming year.

At the annual general meeting of Bromsgrove District Council on May 12, Alvechurch councillor, June Griffiths, was elected as chairman for the forthcoming year.

Council leader Roger Hollingworth told those present at the meeting, including civic dignitaries from across Worcestershire, that June was “strong-willed and compassionate”.

June was born in India but, just a few months old, moved to England, and has lived in the district ever since. June says she always aims to help others, especially those less fortunate then herself, and has worked as a teacher supporting children with learning difficulties.

June has been a councillor for the past 19 years, is an Alvechurch parish councillor, and sits on a number of boards including the Worcestershire Health Scrutiny Board.

Chairmen traditionally choose a couple of charities to support during their year in office, but June has purposely chosen only one this year, Help for Heroes. June has a grandson serving in the forces, and said she chose the charity as we “all know someone” serving.

June will be carrying out her duties with husband Jeffrey, and says her family will play a big role supporting her, during her year in office.

Addressing Wednesday’s meeting, June said: “It is with trepidation and gratitude that I take on this role and it is my pleasure to serve the communities of Bromsgrove. As chairman I intend to have a very local focus and I’m excited about all the people I will meet over the next year.”

June replaces outgoing chairman Chris Scurrell who, during his year, managed to raise more than £11,000 for his chosen charities.

Slideslow Councillor, Diane Campbell, has taken over June’s previous role of vice chairman.
