BROMSGROVE’S MP was the guest of honour at an event commemorating the birthday of AE Housman.
Sajid Javid joined dignitaries and guests for the ceremony to mark the Bromsgrove-born poet’s birthday last Friday, (March 25).
Dozens attended the event, including Bromsgrove District Council chairman June Griffiths.
Extracts were read from the work of the internationally acclaimed poet and scholar, who was born on March 26, 1859, and died on April 30, 1936.
The commemoration is organised by the committee of the Housman Society and held annually on a Friday near to his birthday, by his statue in High Street.
Educated at Bromsgrove School and at Oxford, Housman is probably best remembered for his slim book of poems entitled A Shropshire Lad.
Following the commemorative event, guests were invited to a buffet lunch at Bromsgrove’s Council House, hosted by the council chairman.
