Copsewood 6 Droitwich Spa 48
Midlands Four West (South)

RAMPANT Droitwich made sure that they maintained their powerful start to the season with a six-try demolition of Copsewood in Coventry on Saturday.

Spa capitalised on a strong start to the game to stretch their unbeaten run to three matches.

Victory also propelled red-hot Droitwich to the top of the Midlands Division Four West (South).

Captain Dean Goddard said: "We scored some opportunistic tries but we really deserved to win this game by such a large margin.

"It was definitely more to do with our strong play rather than Copsewood playing badly.

"Our line outs and scrimmaging were really strong and it's good to see that the stuff we're doing in training is paying off in matches."

In the game's opening stages both sides swapped points, with Duncan Hughes grabbing two penalties.

But Spa burst into life when Jim Richardson broke through Copsewood's defence and allowed Leon Hopkins to power over for a touch down.

An intelligent run by full back Ross Coombes sliced open the home team and allowed him to add Droitwich's second try.

The hosts replied with a penalty but it was a case of too-little-too-late, as Droitwich continued to terrorise Copsewood.

Ben Cotterell sprinted in for a try from 30 yards out, before Steve Poke's astute pass set up Richardson for Spa's fourth, as the visitors took a 34-6 lead at half time.

Spa started the second half with the same relentless pace and prop James Shewell set up Phil Horton for a try.

Shewell then made sure of an emphatic victory when he drove over the touch line for a try.

Droitwich took their foot off the gas in the second half and allowed Copsewood to win a series of penalties, but the home side could not battle back into the game.
