HALESOWEN businesses are backing a campaign to save an ATM machine which is currently under threat of closure at Shell Corner.

The cash point has been in use at the Select and Save store for the past 12 months.

Now borough planning chiefs want the ATM to cease as they claim it causes traffic issues.

Former local councillor Stuart Henley is leading the campaign to keep the ATM open at the behest of local business people.

He has launched an online petition which has already attracted more than 200 signatures.

Mr Henley said: "It's important that we keep this ATM open because it has helped bring an increase in footfall to the area, which in turn has helped local business.

"In particular, it has helped those businesses which don't always deal with cards but in cash.

"To say the ATM causes a traffic issue doesn't stand up, because there's a traffic issue whether the ATM is there or not.

"If the ATM is taken away, then people will go to the nearest one, which is in Blackheath and then they'll spend their money there.

"Instead of closing it, the council should be looking at ways to keep the ATM open".
