A NEW community orchard is being set up in Redditch and people are being asked to help.

On Saturday, February 16 volunteers from Woodrow and Greenlands Community Orchard will be planting 20 trees on a patch of land between Woodrow and Greenlands, situated opposite Bengrove Close.

The 20 fruit trees will include apple trees with rare species of apple, particular to the Redditch area and until recently were endangered.

Emma Marshall, from the community group, said: "We will be creating annual events such as harvest festivals, camp fires and maintenance days.

"We already have plans to fundraise for a picnic area and expand the site and range of fruit.

"On Saturday, February 16 at 10am we are encouraging people to come down with a spade and get stuck in.

"Our own MP Rachel MacLean is planning on being there along with our beloved ex-mayor Pattie Hill and our district councillors."
